Short answer
Milk usually drops for one of four reasons: the ration is short of energy or protein, the animal is short of minerals, she is not drinking enough water, or heat or illness is stressing her. Fix the feed and water first, give a mineral mixture every day and milk at fixed times. Feed changes take a few weeks to show in the milk, so give each change time.
Why milk goes down
- Too little green fodder or concentrate for the amount of milk she gives.
- A shortage of minerals, especially calcium and phosphorus, which a milking animal loses every day in her milk.
- Not enough clean water. Milk is mostly water, and a milking animal needs a lot of it, more in summer.
- Heat stress in the hot months.
- Worms, mastitis or another illness.
- The later part of lactation, when yield falls naturally.
What to change
- Balance the ration: green fodder, dry fodder and concentrate together. Higher yielders need more concentrate; ask your vet or dairy advisor for the quantity.
- Give a mineral mixture every day, mixed into the feed.
- Keep clean water in front of the animal all day.
- Milk at the same times every day and milk her out completely.
- Give shade, a fan or a water spray in the hot months.
- Deworm on the schedule your vet gives.
- Change feed slowly. A sudden change upsets the rumen and the milk drops.

Questions farmers ask
Which feed increases milk in a buffalo?
No single feed does it. A buffalo needs green fodder, dry fodder, concentrate and minerals in the right balance. A daily mineral mixture such as Devarshi fills the mineral gap most rations leave.
How long does it take for milk to increase?
Feed changes take time to show in the milk. Give the new ration and the mineral mixture regularly for a few weeks before judging the result.
Does a mineral mixture increase milk?
When the animal is short of minerals, yes: milk, fat and breeding all suffer from a mineral shortage. A mineral mixture cannot replace fodder and water, so those have to be right too.
